Season in Brief

This was a much better season than the previous campaign. Finishing one place below a promotion berth might imply a close-run thing; in truth third was the highest Saints reached and that position was only achieved in the final three games of the season. Nevertheless significant progress was made and a creditable FA Cup run added further interest.

Charlie Wayman's 17 goals came in just 27 appearances after his November transfer from Newcastle United for £10,000, money that was available from the summer transfer of Don Roper to Arsenal.
