Season in Brief

Third place for the second season running; however this time it was a huge disappointment. Saints spent most of the second half of the season at the top of the table and were eight points clear with seven games to play after winning away to Tottenham in front of over 69,000 spectators. That win came at a huge cost with injury to prolific goal scorer Wayman and the run-in saw only one win and two draws.

A draw on the final day, away to Chesterfield, would have been enough to secure promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club's history but defeat meant it would be another 17 years before the club would rise to the peak.
