Season in Brief

31 years in English football's second tier came to an end after a very poor season in which Saints never rose out of the relegation places from November onwards. Injuries and illness were certainly a mitigating factor but whilst goal scoring continued at similar levels to the recent promotion challenges it was a weak defence that was ultimately to blame.

Despite the doom and gloom, the first step to ultimate salvation was taken in mid-season. Ted Bates, who played his final game, was appointed to the coaching staff whilst the club retained his registration as a player.
