Season in Brief

A shadow was cast over the summer with the death from leukaemia, at the age of 25, of Fred Turner. Turner had broken into the team during the previous season before illness stopped his progress.

In early September the board forced the resignation of manager George Roughton and promoted Ted Bates. This was prompted by Sheffield United offering Ted the position of assistant to Joe Mercer. It was a season that offered little promise of things to come with the Saints finishing in their lowest-ever league position.
