Season in Brief

A loan from the Supporters' Club enabled Ted Bates to buy Jimmy Shields from Sunderland and Shields rewarded his new manager by coming a close second to Derek Reeves in the chase to be leading goal scorer.

There were longs spells at the top of the table and the Saints were never out of the top six so fourth might seem disappointing; however there were signs of things to come with the youth team reaching the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup where they lost to Manchester United despite winning away and, in the process beating Matt Busby's famous 'Babes'.
