Season in Brief

Ted Bates was very busy in the transfer market and introduced a number of key players including Cliff Huxford, who was made captain at just 22 years old, and George O'Brien. With nine players making 42 or more appearances the benefits of a settled side were clear. The Saints played a marvellous brand of attacking football and didn't worry about a sometimes alarmingly leaky defence. They were top from February and the Championship was well deserved.
