Season in Brief

With Martin Chivers establishing himself alongside Terry Paine (now a regular in in the England team), George O'Brien and George Kirby it was fair to say that Saints had an embarrassment of striking riches. Indeed Ted Bates was so confident in the emerging Chivers that he sold Kirby in March.

The Saints scored four or more goals on 11 occasions and netting six in the final match of the season meant they broke a century. By finishing fifth, even though 14 points away from promotion, the feeling was growing that it must only be a matter of time before Division One was attained.
