Season in Brief

Ted Bates spent £55,000 to bring centre-forward Ron Davies from Norwich City. He was a Welsh international but had never played in the First Division so his transfer might have been considered a gamble. If there were any doubters they were swiftly silenced as Davies quickly became a Saints hero and legend. Including cup goals his tally of 43 was a major factor in keeping the side up.

Other key signings were goalkeeper Eric Martin and midfielder Hugh Fisher, both of whose arrival in March seemed to be the catalyst for five wins in the final eleven games.
