Season in Brief

Jimmy Gabriel, a long-time target for Ted Bates, was signed from Everton pre-season and the Scottish international would prove to be a brilliant acquisition.

After half a season with a forward line of Paine, Chivers, Davies, Melia and either Channon or Sydenham the manager decided to respond to the continuing attention of Tottenham. Chivers moved to north London for a record fee which included Frank Saul joining the Saints. Davies topped the scoring charts for a second season, this time sharing the honours with George Best.
