Season in Brief

After three seasons of steady progress this was a backward step. Apart from the European nights and excellent wins away to Manchester United and at home to league leaders Everton, this was a poor campaign. The Saints' goal tally was their lowest in over 40 years, largely due to a series of injuries to Ron Davies.

Mike Channon continued to improve and was leading scorer for the first time and Irish international Tony Byrne had his best season, playing 35 times. John Sydenham's career came to an end, but not before he had terrorised Manchester United at Old Trafford, supplying the crosses for three of Davies' four goals.
