Season in Brief

Promotion was clearly Lawrie Mcmenemy's priority and he showed his intentions in September by signing proven goalscorer Ted MacDougall. The new man ended the season as top scorer, an achievement that had been Mike Channon's exclusive domain in each of the previous seven seasons. Many fans had assumed that winning the FA Cup meant promotion would follow; in truth a total of 17 cup matches, at home and abroad, seemed to take the players' minds away from the league. The signing of Alan Ball from Arsenal just before Christmas helped the recovery from what was developing into a relegation struggle and Steve Williams established himself as a key player in midfield.
