Season in Brief

After a busy summer in the transfer market that saw Mike Channon leave for Manchester City while Phil Boyer, Chris Nicholl and Mike Pickering all joined, the Saints were finally ready to concentrate on the priority of gaining promotion.

With little distraction in the cups the Saints were never out of the top three from Christmas onwards and elevation to the top flight was thoroughly deserved. A win on the final day at home to Tottenham would have secured top spot from Bolton and meant Brighton coming third. As it was a goaless draw ensured that Spurs claimed the final promotion slot.
