Season in Brief

Charlie George had signed during the previous season but injury meant he had yet to make his debut. Of greater significance was the return of Mike Channon after only five games. He would immediately form a lethal partnership with Phil Boyer. England centre-half Dave Watson was another significant signing.

The biggest story of the season, not just for the Saints but in the football world generally, was the unveiling, in February, of Kevin Keegan as Lawrie McMenemy's latest big name signing. They didn't come any bigger although it would the following season before Keegan would join the club from Hamburg.
