Season in Brief

Lawrie McMenemy turned down the manager's job at Manchester United and then signed David Armstrong for a club record fee of £600,000. The Saints then embarked on a wonderfully entertaining season.

Having led the League for seven weeks, longer than any other club, the final position was a disappointment. Losing Steve Moran to injury in January was undoubtedly a factor. Alan Ball only missed one game, a remarkable achievement in his 37th year. A UEFA place was secured for a second consecutive season.
