Season in Brief

Peter Shilton joined from Nottingham Forest but within days Kevin Keegan left for Newcastle United, having fallen out with the manager. Many fans complained that they had bought season tickets expecting to see him playing in red and white. There was also the end of an era with Mike Channon leaving the club for a second and final time.

After the Saints suffered a very poor start to the season England's 1982 World Cup captain, Mick Mills, was signed from Ipswich Town and the club managed to climb from 20th to 6th place before losing the final three games of the season. Mark Wright and Danny Wallace both emerged as potential England players.
