Season in Brief

Frank Worthington was the biggest signing of the summer while Mark Dennis and Alan Curtis joined at the end of November.

The Saints would go on to have their most successful season in league terms whilst also coming within three minutes of another trip to Wembley in the FA Cup. This was all done with a combination of attacking football in the best traditions of Southampton, combined with the club's best-ever defensive record. Having England's goalkeeper behind a miserly defence was clearly key in a unique achievement for the Saints; letting in fewer than one goal per game in the 1st Division.
