Season in Brief

David Armstrong and Nick Holmes were given free transfers, George Lawrence went to Millwall and Peter Shilton was sold to Derby County. After just two matches Mark Wright was to follow him with Derek Statham coming in. Other new recruits were John Burridge to replace Shilton, centre-half Kevin Moore and Graham Baker, who returned after five years at Manchester City.

Local rivalries were resumed with the first-ever top level meetings between the Saints and Pompey. Alan Shearer scored a hat-trick in his debut against Arsenal and became the youngest player to do so, breaking Jimmy Greaves' 30 year-old record.
