Season in Brief

Ian Branfoot, who had left his role as Saints Reserves team boss eight years previously to take over at Reading, left his subsequent job as Crystal Palace Reserves coach to take the manager's chair at The Dell. The Wallace twins had already joined Leeds United and then Branfoot released fans' favourite Jimmy Case, who joined Bournemouth.

The cups provided some respite and a trip to Wembley was warmly embraced by club and fans alike but the league provided precious little cheer and the goals per game ratio was the lowest for 66 years. Alan Shearer's goals provided some light in the gloom.
