Season in Brief

The eve of the first season of the Premiership saw a mass exodus. Alan Shearer moved to Blackburn Rovers for a British record fee; Neil Ruddock, Barry Horne and Jon Gittens also left as David Speedie and Kerry Dixon were signed, although both admitted they didn't really want to join the Saints. Early in the season Ken Monkou and Perry Groves were brought in.

This was the season in which Matt le Tissier missed the only penalty of his career as he continued to establish his reputation. That he chose to stay when others had left endeared him to the fans even more. Their opinion of manager Ian Branfoot was rather different and they would make this increasingly and passionately clear in the coming months.
