Season in Brief

Simon Charlton was the only signing of any note in the summer. By Christmas Tim Flowers had gone to Blackburn Rovers with Paul Allen, Peter Reid and  Dave Beasant all coming in. In December Lawrie McMenemy returned as a director.

The Saints had been next to bottom for a month when Ian Branfoot dropped Matt le Tissier for three games in October. On his return he scored two brilliant goals in a home win against Newcastle United. Still in the bottom three at Christmas the board finally acted, releasing Branfoot and bringing in Alan Ball. Results improved, then slipped but the mood of the club was transformed and safety, in the first 'great escape' season, was confirmed on the final day at West Ham United.
