Season in Brief

Centre-halves Kevin Moore and Steve Wood left and Bruce Grobbelaar was signed on a free transfer. Midfielder Ronnie Ekelund signed from Barcelona in September and struck up a good understanding with Matt Le Tissier.

Grobbelaaar was accused in the press of accepting cash to guarantee match results while at Liverpool. The Saints and Alan Ball stood by him as he faced a disrepute charge. Jeff Kenna moved to Blackburn in March while Neil Shipperley and Gordon Watson both joined. A strong finish resulted in the highest final position for five seasons.
