Season in Brief

Alan Ball left to become manager at Manchester City and Dave Merrington was promoted to the number one position. The only summer signing was Alan Neilson from Newcastle United. Barry Venison and Mark Walters signed in the autumn.

It was a season of constant struggle and even fewer goals than the nadir of Ian Branfoot's reign. Another 'great escape' was achieved with a draw on the final day at Wimbledon at the expense of Ball's Manchester City. The biggest highlight was winning 3-1 in the penultimate home match against Manchester United, in which the visitors changed from a grey strip to blue at half-time, claiming the grey made it difficult for team-mates to see each other.
