Season in Brief

Dave Merrington was sacked after just 11 months in charge and replaced by Graeme Souness who had recently left Galatasaray in Turkey. A flurry of transfers followed with they key incomers Claus Lundekvam, Eyal Berkovic and Egil Ostenstad. Subsequently Maik Taylor, Micky Evans and Kevin Davies also joined.

In October Saints put six goals past Manchester United in a match that would long be remembered by all who witnessed it. Nevertheless the club were in the relegation zone for much of the season, surviving by one point on the final day. Off the field major ownership changes saw the departure of Chairman Guy Askham who was replaced by Rupert Lowe.
