Season in Brief

Manager Graeme Souness and Director of Football Lawrie McMenemy resigned to be replaced by Dave Jones, whose Stockport County had beaten the Saints in the Coca-Cola Cup the previous season. Eyal Berkovic left for West Ham while Paul Jones followed his manager to The Dell. Early in the season more transfers followed including the sale of Jim Magilton and the purchases of David Hirst, Kevin Richardson, Carlton Palmer and John Beresford.

After a poor start, losing seven of the first nine games, the club steadily improved and stayed well clear of relegation issues during the latter part of the season. Franny Benali scored the only goal of his career.
