Season in Brief

It was another busy summer with Saints selling Kevin Davies to Blackburn Rovers and buying James Beattie and Stuart Ripley. Mark Hughes was signed from Chelsea then, later, Hassan Kachloul and Chris Marsden also joined.

Another dreadful start to the season saw the club rooted to the bottom of the table until November. The Saints only rose out of the relegation places three games from the end of the campaign and another 'great escape' was secured against Everton on the final day. Marian Pahars, for whom a work permit had been obtained after a prolonged fight, scored both goals in a 2-0 win.
